Torbjörn Einarsson

After completing my education consisting of an University Diploma at Stockholm University, a Master of Science in Computer Science and a Master of Science in Business Administration both at Lund University I started to work in the Civil Society Research Program the Centre for Management and Organization at SSE as a research assistant in 2004. I am since 2006 a PhD Student in Business Administration at the Stockholm School of Economics (SSE) with a planned defence of my thesis in the spring 2011.

The two main focal points of my research are (1) the significance of civil society organizations in the wider society which involves the size, structure and development of the nonprofit sector but also the effects civil society have on individuals, societal fields and the society at large and (2) governance in complex multi-level associations as confederations and federations involving everything from the individual member's decisions to participate (or not) in governing the organization to the work of election committees and boards of directors.

Among other assignments I am secretary in Ideell Arena's scientific board and member of a reference group at Statistics Sweden with the aim to improve official statistics about civil society and the nonprofit sector in Sweden.

Current research projects

Membership and governance in multi-level associations (thesis project). Firmly rooted both in the membership project and the CSO governance project my thesis is about members' role in the internal governance system in large federative and confederative civil society organizations. The data for the thesis project consists of a large scale postal survey sent to 8 000 members in eight large Swedish CSOs. In connection to this I have also conducted an interview study in the Swedish sports movement.

Membership and governance in producer co-operatives. Complementary to my thesis project I am also studying the members' role in the internal governance system in agricultural producers' co-operatives.

Understandings of the successful sports association. In cooperation with Riksidrottsförbundet and SISU Idrottsutbildarna I am carrying out a study of how individuals in the sports movement percieve success of associations.
