Funding our Future II: Understand and allocate costs
Martin Brookes
Abstract: Where do the costs of your activities begin and end? How much funding should you apply for when developing a new project? The long-running debate regarding costs in the voluntary sector takes a major step forward with the publication of acevo's guidelines on cost allocation. Funding our Future II: Understand and Allocate Costs is a new report, based on extensive research in the voluntary sector, which will provide a straight forward method for organisations to understand the costs they incur in delivering services and projects. In addition to a detailed description of the issues, Funding our Future II: Understanding and Allocating Costs includes case studies to illustrate the funding dilemma. It includes practical steps for a consistent approach to cost allocation based upon what organisations are doing, how much they spend doing it, and how much infrastructure must be included to actually provide these services to the end-users. By working through the report, organisations in the voluntary sector will gain a better understanding of their costs. This provides the basis for a more informed dialogue with funders about the true cost of delivering services. In line with the Government's cross-cutting review, this approach will enable apportionment of costs to projects in a realistic manner, and thus funding which reflects the full cost of the service provided.
