Filip Wijkström
Civil society is a thrilling and thriving part of of our contemporary societies and the position and role of these organisations will continue to spark interest and challenges in academia as well as outside for a great number of years ahead of us. The European research on civil society is in its junior years and much is still to be said and done.
Since the early 1990s my own research as well as teaching interest has been geared towards gaining a better understanding of civil society organisations (CSOs) and their role, position and importance in society. The main research projects during the very first years (1993-1998) dealt with the size and composition of the nonprofit sector which lead up to my PhD dissertation at the Stockholm School of Economics (SSE) in 1998 (The Nonprofit Sector in Sweden, Manchester University Press; The Different Faces of Civil Society, EFI).
In the following ten years (1999-2009) – and with the generous initial support for a post-doc position at SSE from the Swedish Cancer Society (Cancerfonden) and the Swedish Red Cross – my line of research deepened through a number of projects on strategy and organisation within CSOs. During this period I have also been able to recruit and work with a number of talented and ambitious doctoral students. Through this cooperation our research at SSE has also developed into this full-fledged research program on Civil Society in Contemporary Society.
Based on joint research with PhD students and other Swedish colleagues conducted within this research program – as well as on the successful cooperation in different projects with a number of European partners at universities like Trinity College, Dublin; Wirtschaftsuniversität Wien; London School of Economics; Münster University and Roskilde University Centre – both my research and teaching have come to focus on governance within as well as through civil society, which will be the main thrust in the next phase of my research.
An important part of the European cooperation and inspiration is the PhD Dissertation Network that started in 2001 (www.studentcorner.eu) where I have acted as one of the facilitators. I have also been invited as visiting scholar to other universities (University of Technology, Sydney, in 1997; Trinity College, Dublin, in 2004; Wirtschaftsuniversität Wien, in 2008) where I have been fortunate to meet and work with inspiring colleagues and also given the opportunity to take an active part in their research as well as teaching.
The close contact and cooperation with civil society leaders are further important sources of challenge and inspiration for me in both my research and teaching. Through our own high-profile initiatives like EPICS as well as in the cooperation with a strategic partner like IDEELL ARENA I have the privilege to continously work with top-level leaders in a wide selection of CSOs, active in Sweden as well as in other European countries. This interaction is also an important vehicle for me to be able to return some of the knowledge and insights gained through our research to society.
